TORONTO, ON – March 14, 2017  – Hurray for the Riff Raff’s incisive and timely concept album The Navigator is out now on ATO Records and hailed as a “rich, courageous” recording by NPR Music with 5 out of 5 stars from The Guardian. It has been met with a NY Times profile on Alynda Segarra, a Pitchfork “Best New Track” review, and a Morning Edition segment that aired this morning on NPR. In the past few days, Alynda and her band have also appeared on TV multiple times including a conversation with Trevor Noah on the Daily Show last week, CBS Saturday and a performance on CONAN last night.

Hurray for the Riff Raff has a jam-packed SXSW that starts tonight and includes showcases at StereoGum, PitchforkNPR Music, Brooklyn Vegan, ATO and more. The full schedule is below, followed by a major international tour that includes a stop in Vancouver on June 15 at Imperial.

The Navigator tells an interwoven, cinematic story of a wandering soul named Navita at a crossroads of identity and ancestral weight.  The 12 original songs were inspired by Segarra’s own journey from the Bronx to the downtown punk scene and beyond, in search of her identity. She looked to poetry including Pedro Pietri’s ‘Puerto Rican Obituary’ and the Nuyorican Cafe, the singer-songwriter Rodriguez, Puerto Rican activist groups the Young Lords and the Ghetto Brothers, Fania Records and more.

RAVES FOR THE NAVIGATOR:

“A rich, courageous new album…’The Navigator’ repositions roots music as an anti-nostalgic tool: a truth-telling device” – NPR

“Segarra’s howl is a gigantic fuck-you to those who’d write off her pain, and one that electrifies the most hair-raising two minutes of music of this young year” – Pitchfork, Best New Track (“Pa’lante”)

“A coming of age concept LP about a young woman that suggests Patti Smith as a barrio poet…this is proudly intersectional folk music” – Rolling Stone, 4 stars

“A genre-bending album of anger, yearning and songs that just flow…there’s not a lot you can’t sing along to, whoever you are” – 5 out of 5 stars, The Guardian UK

“Brilliantly captures the complexity of city life” – Entertainment Weekly

“‘The Navigator’ is nothing if it isn’t a bold risk, a record that attempts to carve out a new kind of Americana, one where the past informs the present instead of the present preserving the past — and one where the political is personal, too” – All Music
